Abstract

This qualitative study investigated the underutilization of occupational therapy services in underserved communities in the Greater Los Angeles area. To bridge the gap and recognize the health disparities in underserved communities, we sought to understand the social and cultural barriers that contribute to parents’ lack of knowledge and access to occupational therapy services. Exploring barriers shaped our approach in educating parents on these services and providing resources. In examining literature, we identified three barriers that limit parental involvement: 1) low socioeconomic status, 2) cultural differences with an emphasis on language, and 3) collaboration between parents and occupational therapists. Through our research, we found limited occupational therapy resources that tailor to the needs of underserved communities. Therefore, a toolkit was developed as a resource for parents with children 5-8 years old seeking occupational therapy services who may be affected by these barriers. We provided opportunities to educate families through a more culturally competent approach. By recognizing and addressing the health care barriers parents from underserved communities face, we were able to promote greater occupational engagement through the toolkit. The toolkit contained information to educate parents on what is occupational therapy, how to navigate through the process of obtaining services, and developmental milestones. It also addressed different specialized services, preparation for an individualized education program meeting, and a list of local resources. To strengthen the applicability and utility of the toolkit, we recruited pediatric occupational therapy practitioners to review and provide feedback on the materials.
