Abstract

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) receiving occupational therapy services often gain skills in a clinical setting that do not translate efficiently in the home environment. The purpose of our project was to facilitate the transference of skills to the home. We have created OTParentEd Series 2, an educational resource for parents of children with ASD between ages 6 and 12. Through an in-depth literature review, we found that parent education not only benefits the child’s occupational success in the home but in doing so, increases parental efficacy and alleviates feelings of stress. The Ecology of Human Performance (EHP) framework added to our understanding of ASD and the relationship between function and context. The Visual, Aural, Reading, Kinesthetic (VARK) model directed our approach to educating adult learners. OTParentEd Series 2 consisted of three modules specific to the needs of our targeted population of parents. The resource was made available on NJA Therapy Services website and could be viewed at one’s convenience. The educational resource offered parents the ability to gain knowledge about ASD, which led to greater self-efficacy and improved interactions with their child. It also provided home-based strategies for optimizing the home environment and yielding success for their child. Offering parents tools to use in the home setting ultimately supported their child’s engagement in daily occupations.
