Abstract

Homeless individuals experience difficulties participating in daily life activities due to changes in their health, their limited abilities to perform activities, and an inability to cope with environmental challenges, resulting in decreased participation, engagement, and well-being. Although several assessments exist that evaluate occupational challenges in physical, cognitive, and social capabilities, there lies a lack of understanding between an individual transitioning from a supportive living facility to success in independent living within a community. The purpose of this study is to validate a conceptual framework for the role of occupational therapy in community reintegration among homeless individuals seeking independent living. This mixed-method quasi-experimental design illustrates the validity of the conceptual framework for community reintegration. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with residents and staff at a recuperative care facility, as well as professionals and nonprofessionals working with the homeless population. A 10 question needs assessment survey to identify the need for occupational therapy services was conducted and evaluated. Three central themes and nine subthemes emerged from data collection, identifying the need for occupational therapy. Results confirmed the validity of the proposed conceptual framework for occupational therapy’s role in understanding the social, physical, political, and cultural factors for community reintegration of homeless individuals.
