Abstract

This project-based thesis explores the challenges of community reintegration experienced by at-risk youth and post-correctional populations. Current literature demonstrates existing gaps of services within forensic settings. As a result of these gaps, high rates of recidivism are observed. Currently, there are few occupational therapists working in forensic settings. Yet, we have established a connection between the needs of the forensic population and the occupational therapy scope of practice. In response to the need for OT expansion into community organizations who serve at-risk youth and formerly-incarcerated individuals, the Occupational Therapy Outreach Toolkit: Community Forensic Settings was developed as a practical resource to educate and help build occupational therapy’s presence within forensic settings. This project aims to increase the number of OTs working in forensic settings and contribute to research in this niche area of practice.
