Abstract
The authors developed a curriculum-based manual for occupational therapists to use to educate caregivers of children with autism spectrum disorder and other developmental disabilities on the occupation of play and the psychology-based DIRFloortime® model. This manual can be used by occupational therapists to educate the caregivers of children with developmental disabilities to use DIRFloortime® model and play strategies with their children at home. The method of producing this manual included updating a previously trialed curriculum by Akemi Davies, MA, OTR/L. As a project, this manual was updated with current evidence-based practice and learning resources to be used throughout the program. As a result, the developed manual includes six weeks of pre-determined learning materials such as educational workshops, relating information within a teaching binder, homework assignments, and take-home information sheets. This manual looks at the first six levels of the DIRFloortime® model’s functional emotional developmental capacities, sensory processing, the importance of play, environmental modifications, and family dynamics. The caregiver workshop is to be run by occupational therapists and focuses on the DIRFloortime® model of interaction with the child through six essential developmental levels. Evidence-based literature states that parent education benefits a child with developmental disorders by having therapy in the child’s natural environment. This project would benefit from future research of implementing the manual to test validity and reliability of the curriculum. This manual is supported by evidence regarding parent education in providing families of children with developmental disabilities the proper resources to be more equipped to interact with their children through the ideas through Connecting Through Play: An Occupational Therapy Guide for Parent Education.
