Abstract

Numerous studies have been conducted on the effectiveness of dance and movement therapy for children and adults with various disabilities and developmental delays. However, there has been little research on the efficacy of community dance programs such as Rhythm Works Integrative Dance© (RWID) that could revolutionize interventions for this population. In this preliminary study, the researchers sought out to quantify perceived trends of improvement in performance skills in children participating in RWID© focusing on the categories of process, social, self-help, and motor skills by surveying instructors and parents/guardians. Two similar questionnaires were created to survey parents and instructors to gather information. Data analysis showed that the most perceived improvement was in processing skills and the lowest perceived improvement was noted in self-help skills. This milestone study could help pave the way for future research in inclusive community dance programs such as RWID© and lead to evidence-based community opportunities for the improvement of performance skills.
