Abstract

One in five veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or depression, and less than half receive minimally adequate treatment for these conditions (RAND, 2008). Veterans often avoid conventional mental health treatment for fear of stigma (Stoller, Greuel, Cimini, Fowler, & Koomar, 2012). Unique treatment approach options are needed to ensure that all veterans are receiving sufficient mental health care. Wounded American Veterans Experience SCUBA (WAVES) Project, Inc. is a sports-oriented organization that acknowledges the potential therapeutic benefits of SCUBA diving for veterans. However, the dive instructors at WAVES Project have no formal mental health training. In addressing this need, our thesis project team developed Turning the Tide, an occupational therapy (OT) evidence-based educational manual for the WAVES Project SCUBA instructors, to complement the dive instructors’ knowledge on PTSD and depression within the veteran population. Turning the Tide enables dive instructors to have more knowledge of standard mental health conditions in veterans and learn basic therapeutic strategies to address symptoms of these conditions in a SCUBA environment. Thus, enhancing the therapeutic use of SCUBA diving at WAVES Project. Turning the Tide as an educational empowerment manual equips dive instructors with relevant knowledge on PTSD and depression to better promote participation in SCUBA diving as a meaningful therapeutic activity for veterans with these conditions.
