Abstract
The purpose of this manual is to help educate district staff including administrators, teachers, and other disciplines within the school district as to what occupational therapy within a school setting looks like and the policies and procedures for making appropriate referrals for educational occupational therapy services. Within the manual are two components: Policies and Procedures specific to the Rialto Unified School District and an Educational Occupational Therapy Teacher Resource Guide. In alignment with the Guidelines of Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy in California Public Schools, the policies and procedure include user-friendly tables and flowcharts that outline educational versus medical occupational therapy, the pre-referral process, occupational therapy referral process, and service delivery in a school setting. The Educational Occupational Therapy Teacher Resource Guide provides Response to Intervention (RtI) strategies that teachers can implement within a classroom setting. These RtI strategies are intended to support a variety of students at all levels of academic need, specifically in the areas of sensory, handwriting/visual-motor, fine-motor, and self-help. We hope to educate and empower all district staff members on all things educational occupational therapy via collaboration and consultation.
