Abstract
Connecting Through Play (CTP) is a caregiver education manual initially created by Akemi Davies, MA, OTR/L. The manual is intended to be a tool for occupational therapists to educate caregivers of children with social-emotional developmental delays, on the appropriate engagement of their children in the occupation of play in home and community settings. The CTP manual contains six modules incorporating three primary principles; The Developmental, Individual-Difference, Relationship-based model (DIR/Floortime®), Sensory Integration (SI), and concepts related to family dynamics. In 2016, Davies et al. developed the current manual as part of a Stanbridge University thesis project. Our research team aimed to evaluate the structure and content of the current manual draft and recruited occupational therapists and educators to review the manual’s curriculum content and design. An adapted I-TECH curriculum design checklist was used to collect reviewer responses. After collection of reviewer data, our research team found that none of the sections of the adapted I-TECH checklist were deemed comprehensive, meaning that further manual development is needed to ensure its quality and usability. The purpose of this review process was to use the collected data to create a high-quality, comprehensive, evidence-based, and user-friendly curriculum for the CTP manual so occupational therapists may educate caregivers about various play-based techniques supporting the social-emotional development of children. Therefore, our research team created lesson plan and PowerPoint templates based on reviewer feedback.
