Abstract

Educational classes for parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are often difficult to find, specifically ones that are created by or based in the theories of occupational therapy. When a child receives an ASD diagnosis, many parents may not have a clear understanding of the implications of such a diagnosis, and the involved care requirements for their child. Research shows that parent education classes are beneficial in parents’ better understanding of a diagnosis, coping with stress that they may be experiencing, and providing helpful strategies to care for and support their child. Our thesis, The OT Parent Education (OTParentEd) Series, was created as an educational tool using evidence-based information and literature, incorporating adult learning theories and strategies, and includes the OT framework the Kawa Model (Iwama, 2006). OTParentEd aims to provide parents with a general overview of ASD, the typical developmental milestone of children based on activities of daily living (ADL), and sensory strategies at home. The aim was to create something that enables parents to be more confident in caring for their child. OTParentEd is an educational tool that can be utilized by OT and any allied health professional, in enabling parents have a better grasp of the sensory processing skills, or lack thereof, to support their child’s overall development, and to enable skill acquisition in the child’s natural environment.
