Abstract

The purpose of this project was to create a guide for occupational therapists treating within a neurodegenerative population while adhering to American Occupational Therapy Association’s Centennial Vision to keep practice evidence-based. Neurodegenerative diseases discussed in this project included Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease, and Huntington’s Disease. The decision to focus on these neurodegenerative disorders came after extensive literature review revealed them as the most common among occupational therapists. The completion of this project resulted in the creation of a manual meant for occupational therapist’s reference. The design of the manual includes chapters broken down by themes found within literature regarding each neurodegenerative disease. Each chapter consists of evidence-based approaches to guide interventions when working with such clients. The six evidence-based themes found regarding interventions within this population were multidisciplinary approach, caregiver burden, energy conservation, exercise programs, respiration and communication, and adaptive equipment. This project created a quick guide for occupational therapists to reference when treating this population, but further research is still warranted. More occupational therapy interventions need to be established as evidence-based in order to prove the profession’s worth within this population.
