Abstract

With the older adult population on the rise and a substantial increase in modern-day technology use, there is a need to educate the older population on smartphone use in order to maintain occupational balance in their meaningful activities. Based on information collected from literature reviews, a smartphone user manual was designed to provide occupational therapy (OT) practitioners with the necessary tools to facilitate the learning process between older adults and smartphones. The manual consists of 16 chapters, including an introduction to the importance of incorporating technology in the lives of older adults through an occupational therapeutic approach; instructions on how to create handouts for clients; and an explanation on how to perform the basic functions of smartphones, such as: managing contacts, changing the settings, making phone and video calls, texting, e-mailing, taking pictures and videos, using safety features, downloading applications, browsing the internet, using maps, and listening to music. The manual can be used as an effective intervention tool with the older adult population by integrating older adults into their community, fostering their engagement in their personal occupations, and reinforcing their ability to acquire well-being and occupational balance in their daily lives through the use of technology.
