Abstract

Children in violent communities have difficulties with social-emotional development which affects their engagement in meaningful occupations such as school, play, and social participation. Afterschool programs provide a viable resource for children in communities of high crime to learn skills needed for healthy development, but there is a lack of staff training in activities that promote social-emotional development. Occupational therapists are qualified to provide services to staff due to their knowledge of the challenges children face and occupation-based groups. This thesis project was designed to increase staff engagement and competence in implementing social-emotional activities with children attending an afterschool program in a low-income and high crime area by creating a playbook of occupation-based activities for children and providing staff training and education on effective implementation of the playbook. We conducted a needs assessment and provided the staff with an in-service on typical social-emotional development before presenting them with a playbook of activities. Post-questionnaires and interviews were completed by the staff of the afterschool program. Results from the post-questionnaires and interviews revealed an improvement in confidence and an increase in the frequency of implementing social-emotional activities with the students. This pilot participatory action research method was an effective afterschool program intervention which increased engagement and staff confidence in implementing social-emotional development activities.
